Davlet picked us up, on way to Eagle festival saw groups of hunters riding along the dirt roads, dressed in fantastic fox and wolf skins and embroidered tunics, fur hats with their eagles propped on wrist supports attached to their saddles. At the festival a bizarre sight, these spectacular looking men lining up on horseback to officially register for the games. Was freezing at first, sleet, only had jeans on, will wear thermals tomorrow. Festival was great, eagles everywhere. Children sitting on canopies on camels, a wolf skin with head attached was tied to someone's jeep, caught by eagles so they said.
High cliffs and mountains all around, the eagle competitions were hilarious sometimes, they were released from the cliff top and were meant to plummet down and catch the lure which was being pulled along by their owner on his horse, some would fly off, soaring above and hovering with the crows before finally deciding to return, others would fly to the cliff and perch there, being entreated by their owners, one eagle attacked a photographer who was perched on the hillside, others attacked roosting eagles.
The sun came out, we went to a ger for lunch, had mutton broth and pancakes and the inevitable salty milky tea.
Afterwards we saw eagles swaddled up in material, 2 lying on the backseat of a jeep, probably being traded. On the road back to Ulgii along the river, people standing in the icy water fishing, the sun setting, along the wide valley was a procession of streams of vehicles - horses, motorbikes, jeeps, camels and Russian vans, dust flying through the sun's rays.
At Tsambagarav hotel drank scotch and vodka, went to Turkish restaurant where we are now, too late to go to the traditional concert, had cold cucumber yoghurt soup, coleslaws, lamb and potato stew, kofta stew, rice, Turkish coffee, for equivalent of $13
