Breakfast at Akmerel's ger, pancakes, jam, eggs and sausages, chatted to Belgium guy, still in shorts, he collects sabres ... Davlet picked us up and went to supermarket to buy food and vodka to take to ger family, drove across the other side of river to Sagsai, over a high pass, saw many eagle hunters on horseback returning home from the festival.
Huge rugged hills, Sagsai village at the bottom of the valley, vast plains with many small rivers that we crossed and recrossed, very bumpy, hundreds of horses grazing. Stopped again at eagle hunters ger, were met by a young woman called Huandih pronounced Quanduk and invited inside, and were surprised to find there the same guy we had stopped on the road near Ulgii and given cigarettes and photographed, then saw often at the festival, he was easy to find as his eagle was very noisy. His name was Ibek, his eagle was sitting in the vestibule of the low house, another eagle sitting inside, this one not yet trained. Ibek looked red eyed & exhausted .. long horse ride to & from the festival, and then probably a lot of partying. We had tea and pastries etc with his family, looked at the competition trophies, his father sang and played on the dombra. Left some rice, chocolate etc with them then drove a short distance to Huandih's place where her parents and little daughter Petel lived, also her brother, his wife and their 2 children Urdu & Dashka.
They brought out more tea, pastries, cheese etcetc but I couldn't handle any more and went for walk, got back to find that was only a snack, and lunch was served. Papa showed us his eagle and how he trained it, put it up on the roof and enticed it down with a lure, then fed it hunks of meat, Andrew held it on his arm. Afterwards Andrew and I went for a walk across the valley, marshy hillocky ground, little rivers, many horses. Then dinner, mutton broth, was nice, we brought out the vodka, Huandih sang and played the dombra, we brought out the rest of the vodka, Andrew sang, then we all slept, in the same room, Andrew and Davlet and I on rugs on the floor, papa in bed with Urdu and mama with Petal.
